Drama, comedy, romance and action have lit up the silver screens this year. With many wonderful movies to choose from, the MTV Movie Awards bring many actors, actresses, and fans together to choose the winner for each of the 14 categories presented.
Actor and comedian Russell Brand hosted the annual MTV Movie Awards on June 3. The categories this year included Movie of the Year, Best Hero, Best Kiss, Best Female Performance, Best Male Performance, Best Comedic Performance, Best Music, Best On-Screen Transformation, Best Gut-Wrenching Performance, Best Fight, Best Cast, Best On-Screen Dirtbag, Breakthrough Performance, the Generation Award and‑—new for this year—the Trailblazer Award.
The general consensus seemed to be that “The Hunger Games,” directed by Gary Ross would be the clear winner for Movie of the Year and leading roles, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson playing Katniss and Peeta would, of course, win Best Female Performance and Best Male Performance. However, while “The Hunger Games” was most definitely a contender, it was a surprise when “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part One” directed by Bill Condon took the stage and accepted the award for Movie of the Year. Also in the running for Movie of the Year were:
-“Bridesmaids” directed by Paul Feig
-“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two” directed by David Yates
-“The Help” directed by Tate Taylor
As expected, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as Bella and Edward in “The Twilight Saga: Part one” blew the audience away with their wedding smooch, winning the title of Best Kiss. Stealing the title away yet again from other nominees such as:
-Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling from “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”
-Emma Watson and Rupert Grint from “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two”
-Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson from “The Hunger Games”
-Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum in “The Vow.”
Though beat out of Movie of the Year, “The Hunger Games” stars did indeed go on to win Best Female and Best Male Performance. Other stars nominated include:
-Emma Stone from “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”
-Emma Watson from “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two”
-Kristen Wiig in “Bridesmaids”
-Rooney Mara from “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”
In the Best Male Performance category were:
-Channing Tatum in “The Vow”
-Daniel Radcliffe from “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two”
-Joseph Gordon-Levitt in “50/50”
-Ryan Gosling in “Drive”
Also from “The Hunger Games,” Elizabeth Banks took the award for Best On-Screen Transformation. None of the others, while still impressive could compare to Banks’ unrecognizable appearance as Effie Trinket. Those who came close enough to be nominated were:
-Colin Farrell in “Horrible Bosses”
-Johnny Depp in “21 Jump Street”
-Michelle Williams in “My Week with Marilyn”
-Rooney Mara from “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”
Jennifer Lawerence and Josh Hutcherson, along with co-star Alexander Ludwig who plays Cato in “The Hunger Games” also won Best Fight, even beating out the battle between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two.” Other fights that made it to the awards were:
-Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill vs. Kid Gang in from “21 Jump Street”
-Tom Cruise vs. Michael Nyqvist in “Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol”
-Tom Hardy vs. Joel Edgerton in “Warrior”
As expected, the cast of Bridesmaids, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper, took Best Gut-Wrenching Performance over the other nominees:
-Bryce Dallas Howard from “The Help”
-Jonah Hill and Rob Riggle from “21 Jump Street”
-Ryan Gosling in “Drive” and Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol”
Also from “Bridesmaids,” Melissa McCarthy beat out the competition for Best Comedic Performance. She got more laughs than comedic actors and actresses such as:
-Jonah Hill from “21 Jump Street”
-Kristen Wiig, also from “Bridesmaids”
-Oliver Cooper from “Project X”
-Zach Galifianakis from “The Hangover Part Two”
“Bridesmaids” was also expected to win Best Cast, but that title was swept up by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two.” Other great casts nominated were:
–Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Dave Franco, Ellie Kemper, Brie Larson and Rob Riggle from “21 Jump Street”
-Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jessica Chastain from “The Help”
-Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Alexander Ludwig, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson and Lenny Kravitz from “The Hunger Games”
Playing a man-eating, intimidating dentist, Jennifer Aniston’s character was so horrible in “Horrible Bosses” that she won the Best On-Screen Dirtbag award. The general prediction was that Bryce Dallas Howard in “The Help” would take this title, but she, along with Colin Farrell in “Horrible Bosses,” John Hamm in “Bridesmaids,” and Oliver Cooper in “Project X” was left without the award as Aniston took the stage.
Rooney Mara was predicted to win Breakthrough Performance, but Shailene Woodley won as teenager, Alex, in “The Descendents.” Her performance was rated higher than those of Elle Fanning in “Super 8,” Liam Hemsworth in “The Hunger Games” and Melissa McCarthy in “Bridesmaids.”
An important part of any movie is its sound track. The nominees for Best Music were:
-College and Electric Youth for “A Real Hero” in “Drive”
-Figurine for “Impossible” in “Like Crazy”
-Kid Cudi for “Pursuit of Happiness (Steve Aoki Dance Remix)” in “Project X”
-The Chemical Brothers for “The Devil is in the Details” in “Hanna”
-And the winner, LMFAO for “Party Rock Anthem” in “21 Jump Street.”
This year Johnny Depp was honored with the annual Generation Award. To celebrate this, The Black Keys performed their hit, “Gold On The Ceiling.”
For the first time ever, the MTV Movie Awards offered the MTV Trailblazer Award. Emma Stone was crowned with this new award for outstanding performance that has earned her at least 25 entertainment awards and three nominations in the MTV awards this year.
