West Linn spring sports teams place in OSAA Academic All-State

Each sports season, Oregon high schools tally up and average the grade point averages (GPAs) of students on spring sports teams. This year, eight of West Linn’s spring sports teams placed in the top ten of all the 46 6A schools in the competition.

The high school’s top placers were choir and the boys track team. The boys track team achieved a third place ranking with an average GPA of 3.55.

Choir placed sixth in state with an average GPA of 3.45. The girls tennis team, orchestra, girls track team, and softball team all achieved seventh place with average GPAs of 3.7, 3.51, 3.69, and 3.6, respectively. The boys tennis team placed tenth with an average GPA of 3.54. Speech & debate placed tenth as well, with an average GPA of 3.67.

Last year West Linn only had five spring sports teams place – the boys tennis team tied 6th with four other schools with an average GPA of 3.62, the boys track team tied second with an average GPA of 3.55, the band tied fourth with two other schools with an average GPA of 3.57, the orchestra tied tenth with an average GPA of 3.49, and speech & debate team tied third with an average GPA of 3.78, which shows a vast improvement.

Marija Jozic, Reporter
Marija Jozic, freshman, is an aspiring writer who has joined the Amplifier for a variety of reasons that revolve around her love of writing. Jozic has been writing books with her friends since sixth grade and is excited at the opportunity to have her work published in the Amplifier. In her free time she prefers to write, draw, and sing which is reflected in her favorite class, choir. Art and literature allow Jozic to express herself however she wants with all of the freedom that comes along with the two hobbies.  Travel and music are also important parts of Marija’s life. She enjoys rhythm and blues along with indie rock and an occasional douse of rap. Rhythm and blues sends out a good message, according to Marija, and she likes how good the singers are live. She has a very clear purpose in life: to be happy. Her favorite quote by Jon Lennon reflects this: “when I was five years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”
