Varsity track doesn’t stand up to competition at Lakeridge

The West Linn varsity track team visited Lakeridge High School Wednesday, May 8 to compete against Clackamas, Grant and Lakeridge. The boys team finished last, while the girls team finished third, ahead of Grant.

The team earned ten top three event finishes including West Linn’s only first place performance of the meet by Connor Cushman, senior, in the 3000 meter run. Cushman completed the race with a time of 9:23.73.

Along with Cushman, West Linn had many strong performances on the track. The girls had of the two top three finishes in the 400 with by Cara Boucher, senior, and Juliana Guthner, freshman, placing second and third respectively. They finished with times of 58.05 and 1:00.14. The boys team also had a second place finisher in the 3000 meter with Grayson Ollar, freshman, who finished in 9:26.56, 2.83 seconds behind Cushman.

The team was also successful in relay events. One of the boys relay teams (Kurt Moon, sophomore, Tristan Stallcup, sophomore, Lucas Evans, sophomore, and Mason Craig, freshman) finished second in the 4×100 relay with a time of 44.77. The girls team had two relay teams finish second in their events. The relay team finished the 4×100 with a time of 50.04. Their second relay team (Juliana Guthner, freshman, Kerry Plunkett, freshman, Isabella Reicher, freshman, and Boucher) finished the 4×400 with a time of 4:03.72.

The boys team contributed one more top three finish in discus, where Gavin Anderson, junior, threw for 119’07”. Julia Boyd-Helm, senior, finished third in shot put and from Emily Hamel, freshman, was third in the pole vault. Boyd-Helm threw for 26’9.5”, and Hamel vaulted for 8’6”.

The track team’s next meet will be in the Three Rivers League Championships at Oregon City, May 16.
