Late mistakes prove costly, as Lions fall short of Sherwood 39-35 in last week’s game

The West Linn Varsity Football team (5-1, 3-1 Three Rivers League), fell short in the battle against Sherwood (6-0, 4-0 TRL) 39-35.
The Lions offense started off hot, holding a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Running back Elijah Molden, junior, scored on a 35 yard run, while quarterback Tim Tawa, junior, connected with wide receiver Connor Berggren, senior, on an eight yard pass.
Sherwood responded quickly by utilizing their run game, cutting the lead 14-7. The Lions countered with a 59 yard touchdown pass from Tawa to Molden, extending their lead 21-7.
The Bowmen offense answered with two touchdowns in consecutive series, tying the game at halftime with the score, at 21.
After a field goal scored by Sherwood giving them the lead at 24-21, Tawa came out and threw an 85 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver, Jake Meisen, junior, and a 76 yard pass to Berggren, giving the Lions a 35-24 lead in the 4th quarter.
Sherwood then stormed down the field, capping the drive with a rushing touchdown, cutting the Lions lead 35-32 with five minutes to go.
During the Lions offensive series Tawa dropped back to pass, and it was intercepted by Sherwood as they returned it for a touchdown. The Lions were down 39-35 with two minutes left, however they were unable to overcome Sherwood’s defense and fell 39-35.
“We lost but we still have a goal for the season,” remarked running back Qawi Ntsasa, sophomore. “It was just one little setback. We are ready to go over to Tigard and show people that we are still a state contending team.”
Even with the loss, the Lions are still working hard with three remaining games before playoffs.
“We learned what it takes to win big games,” said wide receiver Connor Berggren, senior, “ and we needed that experience. We just have to clean up our mistakes and play our game.”
Next up for the Lions is Tigard (3-3, 3-1 TRL) an away game, 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
