Boys basketball defeats Grant in first outing

As the final buzzer sounded, West Linn dunked their way to victory in a 84-74 performance against Grant. Khalid Thomas, senior forward, finished with an outstanding 20 points while fighting for 12 rebounds. Thomas’s efforts were complemented by Braden Olsen, senior point guard, who set up teammates for easy buckets.

“I’m enjoying playing with my team, we’re really beginning to bond together. I wasn’t able to get my 20 points without my teammates. Tonight we focused on making the extra pass, which in turn led to easy baskets,” Thomas said. “Braden Olsen and I have played together for a couple years now on the same AAU basketball team. Braden and I  get along well both on and off the court, our chemistry has developed quickly since the beginning of the season. I’m looking forward to the rest of my senior season.”

West Linn’s inside presence was strong, especially when taking into account Grant’s physical forward Kelton Samore. Both team’s big men battled down low for rebounds and tough earned scores throughout the game. Samore finished with 21 points, the most by any player on either team. This 6’9 forward could pose as the Loins’ toughest challenge until Les Schwab Invitational, which tips off December 28th at Liberty High.

This upcoming Friday West Linn travels to Central Catholic High School to compete in this year’s Halligan Tournament. In preparation for a first round mathchup against Sheldon, there are defensive aspects that must be improved. Offensively the Lions bring a multitude of weapons with senior guards in sharpshooter Nolan Bertain, accompanied by Rodney Hounshell. Last night’s win against Grant was a small sample of what’s to come. With a talent-filled roster, West Linn has potential to win a record-breaking 5th straight State Championship.
