With Sadie Hawkins approaching sooner than expected, West Linn High School students are scrambling to find a date. The WLHS Associated Student Body decided to move the date of the  to Feb. 21 because the previous time, March 21, conflicted with the start of Spring Break.

“ASB as a whole decided to change the date,” Sarah McKay, junior and ASB member said. “Because most students would be out of town, and ASB figured that not many students would be attending the dance.”

The Sadie Hawkins dance was named after a character created by the comic artist Al Capp in this comic strip, Li’l Abner. It was a day in November when unmarried women of the cartoon town Dogpatch would chase and marry bachelors. This idea became popular in Canada and the U.S., so followers decided to emulate the tradition by organizing dances where women ask out men. The first of these events recorded was Nov. 9, 1938.

“We still have to decide more details about the dance,” McKay said. “All we know right now is where the dance will be held and where it will be.” ASB has been very busy the past few weeks working on the mock reality show, WLHS Survivor, and has had little time to work on the dance. Students are eagerly anticipating the dance.

The dance will be held in the Auxiliary Gym from 8-11 p.m. This year’s theme will be opposites attract. Tickets will be $10 and students can buy tickets at the student store or at the dance.
