New location for Youth Music Project

Less than a half mile from the original site, the Youth Music Project relocated to a larger building this past summer. Located in the Willamette area of West Linn, YMP opened its doors to the surrounding West Linn community two years ago with a mission to “provide outstanding rock, pop, and country music education for youth by offering free or low cost lessons, free instrument use, and exceptional performance opportunities.”

The YMP celebrated a new chapter in Dec by hosting a grand-opening party complete with student recitals, retail for sale, and an after-party concert. The atmosphere of the YMP was warm and inviting, and it is evident that the staff has a calling for teaching music. It is also evident that the students of the YMP, from grade school to high school level, love to learn.

For the many musically and artistically gifted West Linn students the YMP is a great opportunity to hone their instrumental, dance or art abilities. Students that cannot afford lessons are awarded full scholarships if they qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Students who are looking for internships to add to their college resume can apply on their website to be a YMP high school intern. Three WLHS students, Sarita Gulati, 12, Peter Mccoid, 11 and Carson Pike, 12, already work as YMP interns.

“My favorite part about working at YMP is getting to be around people who love music as much as I do. I especially love helping out in classes and getting to see kids musical abilities progress throughout the year,” Gulati said.

To enroll in lessons, call the YMP main number for more information 503-616-5967, or visit the website: http://www.youthmusicproject.org/
