Kemper stars as Kimmy Schmidt, a former “mole woman” who was trapped underground for 15 years and is now trying to make it in New York city, 10 seconds at a time.

Trapped underground for 15 years in Indiana, Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper)  believed the world had ended. Kidnapped by a religious cult leader and forced into an underground bunker, Schmidt is in for a wake up call when she is finally rescued by local police. After being whisked away to New York City for interviews, Schmidt learns that all of the other women who were trapped like she was are headed back to Indiana. She decides she needs to change her life and stay in NYC. With only an eighth grade education and very little money, Schmidt is determined to make  it in the city.

The lighthearted show provides a stark contrast from many other of Netflix popular original series such as “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black.”  The show portrays what a sheltered person would act after being trapped for so many years through quirky humor and clever storytelling.

In the 13 episode arc, we see a dramatic growth with Kemper’s character thanks to those who she meets in the city. She is able to land a job as an assistant working for the fabulously wealthy Jacqueline Voorhees (Jane Krakowski), meets her best friend Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess) and even has her first kiss, at 30 years old.

“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is a refreshing comedy. Tina Fey has created a hit, in her first time producing since “30 Rock” ended. Kemper and her supporting characters execute their roles perfectly, playing out many of these unlikely real world situations as they would truly happen. Be sure not to binge watch all these episodes too quickly. Season 2 is set to debut in March of 2016.
