Golden Globe Awards follows expectations and proves to be a worthwhile watch

The 74th Golden Globe Awards was recently and needless to say, the Beverly Hilton Hotel was filled with talent. Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, the ceremony was a can’t miss. But, just incase you weren’t able to catch it last night,  here were the big winners of the night.

Best Drama Motion Picture:

Directed and written by Barry Jenkins,  Moonlight took home first in this category. The motion picture capturing the life of a black child growing up in a tough Miami neighborhood, struggling to find his place in the world stole the hearts of many.

Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture:

The movie La La Land, directed and written by Damien Chazelle, follows the lives of an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) and jazz pianist (Ryan Gosling) and their budding romance that is challenged by their careers pulling them apart. This musical love story took first in this category. Along with this, both Gosling and Stone took first in their acting categories for their roles in this movie.

 

The Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Motion Picture:

This award went to  Isabelle Huppert for her role in the movie Elle. This was one of the so called surprising wins that caught a few off guard. The movie followed a businesswoman tracking down an unknown man who raped her, but in the process gets caught in a back and forth game of cat and mouse with the unknown man.

 

The Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama Motion Picture:

 Casey Affleck wound up with this award for his lead role as Lee Chandler in Manchester by the Sea, a story following an uncle that is left with taking care of his nephew after the father of the boy dies.

 

The Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture and The Best Director for a Motion Picture :

Both of these awards ended up going to Damien Chazelle for La La Land, adding on to the movies numerous awards it had already won. The movie ended up being nominated for seven awards and won every award it was nominated for, but the person who really stole the show was Meryl Streep.

 

Cecil B. DeMille Award:

Meryl Streep stole the show with her speech following receiving this award. She went on to discuss where actors were from and how, “an actor’s only job is to enter the lives of people who are different from us, and let you feel, what that feels like,” (Meryl Streep) Her speech left the crowd applauding and breathe taken.
