It came as a surprise on Aug. 20 when Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige announced that Spider-Man would no longer be apart of their cinematic universe. Fans everywhere were left with broken hearts as they wondered what the future would be now for their favorite web shooter. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was introduced in 2016 and has since become a fan favorite. Except, with Sony taking back control, Spider-Man will only appear in movies produced by Sony, but no longer be involved in the adventures from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a recent interview with GQ Style, Holland shared his thoughts on the departure from the MCU. “I’m not shy about expressing how incredible the last five years have been with Marvel,” Holland said. “I’ve truly had the time of my life, and in so many respects, they have made my dreams come true as an actor. Sony has also been really good to me, and the global success of ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ is a real testament to their support, skill, and commitment. The legacy and future of Spidey rest in Sony’s safe hands. I really am nothing but grateful, and I’ve made friends for life along the way.”

Still, the departure of Holland’s character leaves the question of what now? What might happen now that Spider-Man has left the MCU? There are still plot holes regarding the Tony Stark and Peter Parker storyline that Disney was crafting for the Holland films. Still, Sony’s credited with having the best Spider-Man film (Spider-Man into the Spiderverse has the highest rotten tomatoes rating at 97% out of all of the Spider-Man movies). With such a beloved character stuck between the two studios, we’ll have to see what happens to our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in the next installment.
