The School’s Backyard: Local Biodiversity
Also called the holly-leaved barberry, the Oregon grape blossom was designated the official state flower in 1899. A shrub native to the Pacific coast, these flowers sprout all throughout early summer, bringing to a dark blue berry that ripens late in the fall. These berries are tart containing large seeds, and are often used to make jam.
