Grace Nickas
Dedication to the Sport Grace Nickas, junior, talks about her life after starting rowing, and the opportunities it brought As the paddles slam across the once calm lake, now rippling in the disturbed water, eight singular yet powerful forces work in tandem to propel the boat from the sandy and rough shore, now shrinking in the distance. The breeze of the boat’s robust force cuts through the frosty air of the newest season, keeping one teammate’s senses sharp as she continues on one of her numerous, hour long practice sessions. “I’ve been a part of rowing team for three years.” Grace Nickas, junior, said. Nickas joined rowing soon after tiring of playing soccer, while still wanting to pursue a new sport. Soon, after one passion ended, another began, and Nickas quickly spent every passing second practicing rowing. “Rowing is so rewarding. It’s a great feeling when you win a race, get in a good practice, or get a personal record.” Nickas said. “We’ve been to a lot of competitions. I’ve been to San Diego, Sacramento, Seattle, and Canada.” Nickas said. Rowing has also provided intensive skillsets that Nickas has to practice during her numerous sessions. “You learn a lot of mental toughness skills. You need to know how to mentally stick with it and put all your energy into it. You also have to have great teamwork skills to work with people.” Nickas works with eight to nine people in her boat at one time, and said that her teammates have also been a crucial aspect to her rowing career. “I love my teammates. Before practice we all hang out and we all get really bonded to the people in our boat. I’ve made a lot of friends from rowing.” Nickas said. While starting on her third year participating in the sport, Nickas still sees it as a crucial part in her future plans. “It’s how I plan to go to college. I plan to do rowing four years after high school. I’ll see where it goes after that.” Nickas said.    As she continues to prepare for college, she plans to go into a science oriented field. “I really like AP Biology because I really like sciences. I want to go into some sort of medical science.” Until that time comes, Nickas plans to spend 20 hours a week dedicated to rowing practice during the seasons. And in the free moments she has left, she will be spending her third year as a writer for WLHSnow. Now, Nickas is the current events editor of the publication, and enjoys every minute of it.
