It’s the big rivalry game. Battle of the Bridge, they call it. Football season has started and it’s West Linn vs Oregon City. Our student section erupts into a roar as the team sprints onto the field, confident in our ability to win. The players line up. Within seconds West Linn is on their way to scoring. Tawa throws the ball in a direct spiral to Molden, who jumps to catch the ball just out of reach of his defender. Snap. The moment. Our first touchdown of the season. It’s captured in a perfectly-timed shot, to be accessible to all players for years to come…

West Linn sports photographer, Jess Reynolds, 11, has experienced moments like this many times.. You can find her at all the varsity games, capturing beautiful moments that many people cannot see in the actual games. Though she is new to sports photography, she already shows talent and drive to be one of the “it” photographers of the school.

“I am excited to see what kind of shots I can get by just following the ball, to see the faces they make as they are going for the ball.”

Jess is not only a fantastic photographer, she is fascinated by the effects that could possibly be brought on by the metaphysical properties of crystals. She has a varied collection of about 12 different crystals, each with different characteristics and properties. “I believe that they are a great placebo, they are a good temporary fix for unpleasant emotions,” she says.

Someone who is a major part of Jess’ life is her twin sister, Jenny. But they are not just any type of twins, they are called mirror identical twins. “She is left handed, I am right handed. If I lost and gained a tooth, she would lose and gain the same tooth on the opposite side. And, it’s obvious of course that we look exactly the same.” Jess and Jenny are extremely close to one another, Jess says, “we can’t go 5 minutes without talking to each other.”

Even still, Jess has another connection that she can’t seem to explain. “Whenever I see an animal, I just have to hug it.” It could be a dog, cat, or horse. She says that she feels a connection with animals that not many other people have.

Since she was 6 years old, Jess has been going to an interfaith multi-racial camp and is now old enough to be a counselor. She hopes to open up her own one day because, “I feel like it is important for kids to learn peace at a very young age.”

“I may be quiet when you first meet me. But if you tell that to my friends, they’ll burst out laughing. I have a crazy-weird side that no one really knows, and my sister can agree.”
