Mary Lambert’s “Secrets” brings new voice to the pop genre
Ever since Mary Lambert was featured on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s hit, “Same Love,” she has been known for her support of gay rights as well as for her promotion of self-empowerment in and outside of her music. With her new album, “Heart on my Sleeve,”she hopes people will be inspired by her music much like she was by spoken word poets and folk music growing up.
Lambert’s single “Secrets” is about loving yourself but with a twist, “It’s easy to paint a pretty picture and tell everyone to love themselves, but it’s way more complicated than that,” she said. Lambert created this song to share her own troubles with being gay and bipolar, and to show that vulnerability is important to growing up and letting go. “Secrets” does just that with her open writing and uplifting music.
My favorite thing that Lambert shares on her single is her catchy talk singing lyrics such as “I’m overweight/ I’m always late/ I’ve got too many things to say.” Right from the beginning she shares her self-deprecating humor and her carefree attitude which add to her already charismatic music.
Another thing to appreciate from “Secrets” is that it doesn’t feature any put downs like some other so-called empowering pop songs. Meghan Trainor’s song “All about that Bass” speaks about female confidence but tells otherwise. It focuses on how guys like bigger girls more than skinny girls, which is counteractive in its effort to show girls to not worry about their size and guys approval. Lambert’s focal point is to let go of your flaws completely and not listen to what society wants you to be.
The one problem I have “Secrets” is the music behind the message. Because of it’s pop sound, it feels very done before with its clapping beats and piano playing. That being said, it’s hard to hate on Lambert at all because of her positivity and pretty voice.
Lambert achieved what she set out to do on Heart on my Sleeve with the single “Secrets.” She assures fans that it’s okay to embrace weaknesses and roll with the punches that life gives.
Mary Lamberts single “Secrets” adds fresh new meaning to pop songs. Lambert is from Seattle and has just dropped her album “Heart on my Sleeve.”
