At the end of the 2023-24 school year, students were given the opportunity to vote on the next members of the Associated Student Body (ASB) for the 2024-25 school year. After a couple of weeks, multiple speeches, and a lot of campaigning, the majority of students voted for cheer captain Mia Harmon, senior, to be the next ASB President.

First joining ASB with aspirations of being on the LiveROAR, Harmon climbed through the ranks, going from Sophomore Officer, to Athletic Commissioner, and now ASB President. Harmon and the rest of ASB are already preparing events for the upcoming year.

“The first event that we’re really going to put on and push this year is Homecoming,” Harmon said. “Homecoming week is a big one for us. We have our Homecoming spirit week, so tons of fun dress-up days. We have the Homecoming football game and the Homecoming assembly. We also have Homecoming Court, which is fun for all grades in the school because everyone gets to participate in that. And on top of that, we also have our Homecoming dance.” 

With those events coming into effect in the weeks to come, ASB is hoping to get the spirit back up for homecoming.

“I’m really excited to see the school spirit grow. That’s one of our main goals as ASB this year, because I feel like we’ve had such good momentum over the past few years. It’s still a challenge every once in a while to get that school spirit up and try to restore old traditions with the same effect that it used to have,” Harmon said. “The exciting thing for me this year is just really continuing that momentum and pushing the school spirit, because we’re all unique and we’re all special individuals, but as a school, we are lions. We’re all West Linn High School [students], so it’s important to keep in mind to unify.”

Alongside wanting to improve school spirit, another of ASB’s goals is making the environment better for students.

“One [goal] as an ASB that we’re really focusing on, is our pillars. If you’ve noticed, the first couple days [of school], ASB had worked to set up a very high-spirited environment for everyone to come back to,” Harmon said. “We’re really working on integrating new aspects to the ROAR. This year, we’re trying to get a couple of videos up there that will really pop to students, and also bring in students from different clubs or activities so that they can have a voice.”

Outside of ASB, Harmon is one of the captains on the cheerleading team alongside Briana Gunselman, senior. During the 2023-24 school year, Harmon and the cheer team won state, which was the first time in the history for the team.

“[For my] senior year the goal is to keep [it] up and hopefully be back to back state champions and bring home another banner. I’m so excited to be on that team and captain is also something that I’ve dreamed about since I was in third grade, so having that feels like a dream come true,” Harmon said. “I’m so fortunate to have the opportunity to cheer with these amazing girls and to be on ASB with all of our amazing commissioners and officers. And aside from my activities, I’m really just excited to experience high school.”
