Learning the ropes. On the first official day of the convention, students receive their name tags on JEA/NSPA-labeled lanyards which they can add ribbons to. The ribbons may be from certain vendors or may have their job titles from their publications on them. The lanyards are just one thing attendees look forward to at the convention. Sophia Martella, senior, is the Student Section Editor on the current yearbook staff and joined the group for her first convention experience. “We [would wake] up around 4 a.m. West Coast time, and [go] out [to eat] breakfast, whether that was like in the little market, in the hotel, or at Trader Joe's,” Martella said. “After that, we would all have different sessions and so we split up and [went] our own ways. But it was really cool to be able to go to those independently and to learn about how music relates to writing, or photography in Philadelphia.”

All smiles. The group poses for a photo with last year’s book, “This is Our House,” along with their award for third Best in Show. Meikle, who was an Editor-in-Chief for the yearbook last year as well, holds both and stands at the center of the group. “That was an amazing feeling, going and grabbing the third place award,” Meikle said. “All of it paid off. I cried so much over that book, being able to receive [the award] was one of the highlights of my high school career, it was like the coolest thing ever.”

![MORE THAN A GAME. With two diving catches in the outfield, the Lions showed up defensively, aiding in their victory over the Pacers. One catch was made by Atwood, and the other by McGraw. Throughout the game, the Lions knew that it wasn’t just about their victory today. “I think [playing for cancer] makes it bigger than just a game,” McGraw said. “Knowing that you have a bigger impact in this world than just who you are as one person.”](https://wlhsnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/I70A1454-1-1200x800.jpg)
