Classes will not meet during next month’s professional growth Wednesday as a result of a vote taken at Monday night’s special school board meeting. Staff throughout the district plan to participate in a state-wide day of action. Teachers are organizing in response to anticipated budget cuts for schools, Oregon Education Association president John Larson told KATU news in an interview.

The school does not have information on what the turnout will be for this day of solidarity.

The West Linn-Wilsonville district, as well as adjacent districts, had been considering the possibility of a cancellation for the past few weeks, but the final call was made last night, according to Andrew Kilstrom, director of communications. Kilstrom notes that the school board wanted to give families the most amount of time possible to schedule any necessary child care.

“We appreciate everyone’s flexibility and understanding,” Kilstrom said, on the short notice schedule change.

The protest comes on the heels of strikes and sickouts across the nation calling for increased school funding, including recent protests in California.
