The chicken sandwich that broke the internet had such high demand it broke the freezers at Popeyes. Back on Aug. 12, 2019, the popular fast-food chicken spot from Louisiana released a new item to the menu, a chicken sandwich. The want for the Popeyes sandwich only grew as the Popeyes official twitter commented on a Chick-fil-A post saying, “y’all good?” The tweet led to the Popeyes twitter gaining over 25,000 new followers, and the popularity of the new chicken sandwich soared. The rush to compare the two wildly popular chicken sandwiches of Popeyes and Chick-fil-A led to Popeyes selling out of chicken sandwiches, until this past Sunday, Nov. 3.

On the first day of the chicken sandwich being back, the line to get the sandwich was very long.  The drive-through line was more than ten cars long and the line inside was even worse. It took 45 minutes to get the sandwich, but it was well worth it.

To start off, the smell was nothing short of heavenly. The bun is average, nothing special, but it gets the job done. The pickles are not the best fast food pickles but also not the worst. The sauce pairs bring the whole thing together nicely, but the chicken truly is the star of the show.  It’s a hefty piece of chicken, but it’s the perfect amount. Usually, at fast-food restaurants, the chicken is hidden behind the bun and breading, but this chicken shines. The breading is crunchy and the chicken is juicy, it absolutely hits it out of the park with the chicken, being more of a fried chicken sandwich and less of a boring chicken patty.  The Popeyes chicken sandwich is $3.49 while the Chick-fil-A sandwich is only $3.29 for the regular, but the price difference will not make a difference.

While you may get fresher pickles and more interesting options at Chick-fil-A, Popeyes has them beat.  With a similar bun, the standout is the chicken. The chicken is where Popeyes leaves Chick-fil-A in the dust, having more chicken and better breading. The Popeyes chicken sandwich wins.  Whether you have that chicken sandwich craving or need a switch from having the same boring chicken sandwiches, the new sandwich from Popeyes lives up to the hype.
