Conference realignment won’t derail the annual Battle of the Bridge rivalry between West Linn and Oregon City
In a surprising twist this offseason, the Three Rivers League was modified, with Newberg, Sherwood, Tigard, and Tualatin added to an already strong league. With those additions, subtractions had to be made. Clackamas and Oregon City were ousted. Many believed that the West Linn-Oregon City rivalry had ended, concluding a contest that was the longest west of the Mississippi. Fortunately, the schools worked out a deal to play each other annually, and continue the epic battle.
“I feel like the rivalry with Oregon City will always be one of the most intense games,” Ryan Anderson, senior defensive lineman/outside linebacker, said. “We want to beat them badly whether they’re in our conference or not. Winning that game will leave our mark on history.”
Tonight, the Lions will battle the Pioneers at home at 7 p.m. in a non league game and many changes have been made since the last time the teams faced off against each other. West Linn will be led by new head coach Chris Miller, who quarterback played at Oregon and in the National Football League. With a new coach, new field, and new uniforms, players are excited to take the field again.
“I’m looking forward to competing hard with my friends for one last year,” Anderson said.
