Throwing on the wheel, Henry Dillingham practices his patience while learning how to throw. Henry is a teacher aid in fourth period AP 3D-Design. After helping out around the classroom, he decided to give the wheel a try. With patience, practice and a little assistance, Henry was able to successfully sculpt his first bowl. “It’s hard to pick up on,” Henry said. “Once Justin [Rademacher] helped me center it, I started to really enjoy it.”

Preparing for her next project, Jaya Baker, junior, rolls out coils making sure to keep even pressure across the coil for accurate execution. Jaya is onto her next project— another vase, this time with coils. In this process, Jaya explains that she will need to make coils that she will then stack on top of each other in order to construct her ideal shape.

On her most recent artwork, Baker runs her finger over the pieces checking for imperfections and sharp pieces of ceramic that may be hidden from the eye. “I especially need to watch out for the mushrooms, the texture of the stipe could have a lot of sharp pieces that I may need to sand down,” Baker says while continuing to fine-tune her piece.

After going through the firing process, Sam Wilson, junior, glazes her piece by hand. During fourth period AP 3D-Design, Wilson has focused her portfolio around function items with a special interest on pitchers, vases and teapots. In her most recent project she has taken inspiration from a lemon as she replicates the texture and color scheme into her artwork.
