Where the magic happens. Some of the features in the library student showcase are the work of students in ceramics classes. The showcase happens about every 2 months. Their current project is working on cups, but the previous project was ghosts for Halloween. Room 201 in the 700 building includes a kiln, pottery wheel, and glaze wall. These are things students use to create their pieces. Marianna Garvey, ceramics teacher, does her best to help her students in different ways. “My goal is to provide opportunities for students to learn about the ceramics medium and art-making in whatever way suits them.”

Getting fired up. Student artwork sits in the kiln, waiting to be heated up. The kiln is a ball of fire where students put their creations when they are done making their pieces. Because of the high temperature, students have to use caution when putting their pieces in. “Things can definitely go wrong. It’s not difficult to use, but it is a machine, so it sometimes breaks down, or you have to be sure it’s in the right setting,” Garvey said.

The room of life. A shelf stores finished and unfinished pieces by students. Some projects are waiting to be put in the kiln or glazed. Pieces can take a long time to come through, depending on what someone is making. “My beginning ceramics [classes] are working on mugs, ceramic 2 are working on throwing bowls or large pitchers, and my AP students are all doing independent projects.”

During the month of October, students make art pieces such as ghosts and pumpkins for Halloween. They used different techniques, like how they fold the ghosts, as well as different colors such as yellow and orange. When finished, their projects were put in an art gallery in the school library so other students could see the work.

Bringing colors to life. A wall displays different types of glazes and how they change before and after firing in the kiln. There are different glazes to choose from so students can have some creative opportunities. “We talk about color theory before we choose,” Garvey said. “It’s tricky with glaze because it’s unpredictable.”
