Asian Pacific Islanders

Asian Pacific Islander (API) is a student union that focuses on celebrating Asian Pacific Islander culture. Run by Olivia Wang, Emily Pierce, and Jada Trieu, juniors, API aims to organize fundraisers and create a space for Asian Pacific Islander students to come together. They meet in room B201 every other Wednesday to enjoy activities, food, and boba.

“It's a good place to join a community full of people that can support each other and advocate for API cultures,” Emi Uchishiba, junior, said.

Black Student Union

Black Student Union (BSU) is a student union for those who are interested in representing African American students at the high school. President Nyamma Nelson, senior, and Vice President Kennedy Toomer, junior, work to create a close community within a predominantly white school by discussing difficult topics, setting goals, and organizing events and fundraisers.

“We have so much fun at our meetings,” Toomer said. “Everyone is just having a good time every single time.”

CTE Environmental Science

The College and Technical Education (CTE) Environmental Science club aims to get students outdoors and connected to nature with hands-on experiences. Co-presidents Kaelyn Jones and Finn Howell, seniors, work to organize five trips a year, including a couple overnight trips, as well as hosting kids environmental science camps. These opportunities bring the club together into a bonded and supportive community for all students.

“Everyone here is just so friendly and kind, and they feel so passionate about the things that they do,” Jones said. “I love them.”

Lions and Canines

Students who love dogs and want to support them may consider joining the Lions and Canines club. Run by Grace Heath, Abbie Bevilacque, Mikeal Brubaker, and Scout Harrington, sophomores, the Lions and Canines club is about making the school community more aware of the work that service dogs put in and raising money for canine companions. The club meets twice a month in room A101 to enjoy guest speakers and one-on-one time with dogs.

“My favorite thing to do is to say ‘Hi’ to [the dogs],” Heath said. “They are so sweet.”

Computer Programming

The Computer Programming Club is a new opportunity for students interested in an introduction to coding and helping their community. Run by Ajay Shah, Sydney Dow, and Duncan Duffield, seniors, the Computer Programming Club is committed to offering camps and classes not previously seen at the school.

“I like helping people in general, but especially with programming and tech,” Shah said. “We work with senior citizens, [like] getting their Google Drive set up, [or] getting new students involved. That’s my favorite part.”

Fellowship of Christian Athletes

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is a place for students to come together and talk about their faith. Run by Naomi Oltmans, senior, Brooklyn Crawford, Tinsley Inman, Silas Reynolds, and Mason Perkins, juniors, FCA aims to create a positive environment where students can connect on a deeper level than just their sport. They meet every Thursday during lunch in the Aux Gym for pizza and worship.

“It’s a great way for people to learn more about Jesus and connect with friends in that atmosphere,” Oltmans said.

Lotus Dance

The Lotus Dance Club aims to bring more Asian representation to the school through dance. Presidents Sandy Tang and Sakura Metze, juniors, are members of the independent Jade Dance Team and want to give students the chance to express themselves through dance to celebrate Asian cultures. The Lotus Dance club brings more awareness to Asian Pacific Islander students, especially during the Lunar New Year, API month, and holidays.

“There is a lot of motivation,” Metze said. “Seeing how people appreciate our art is really inspiring.”

Robotics Team

The Robotics Team offers hands-on experiences for students to explore fields such as engineering or software. Run by Emma Huberty and Lauren Gault, seniors, Robotics can introduce students to marketing, community outreach, what it’s like to run a business, and more. Also known for its close community, the program is open to all. They meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8:30 p.m. in room 715.

“Robotics is a really good place for people to learn and experience things that they would never experience otherwise,” Ruby Deng, senior, said. “It sets people up for their future careers.”

National Honors Society

National Honors Society (NHS) is a way to get connected to volunteering opportunities that will benefit the community after high school. President Lauren Kamali, and Officers Naomi Oltmans, Sydney Taylor, Steven Walker, and Rachel Han, seniors, strive to give students the chance to get to know themselves and become passionate about community issues they may not have known about otherwise.

“NHS is a group of like-minded individuals who are really striving for academic excellence and being the kindest version of themselves,” Taylor said.

Interested applicants require a 3.5 minimum GPA, as well as 20 hours of community service. Applications are due Sept. 27, 2024, and are available on their Google Classroom. To join, contact the club adviser, Brandon Smith ([email protected]). Meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month in the Aux Gym.

Muslim Student Union

Muslim Student Union (MSU) is a community for those who want to represent Muslim students at the high school or are interested in learning more about Islam. Run by Maryam Al Medyadi and Natati Aman-Tufa, sophomores, the club works to create a welcoming space for all students and celebrate Muslim culture. This school year, they plan to collaborate with the Middle Eastern and South Asian clubs to organize food trucks, guest speakers, and more.

“You should join this club,” Al Medyadi said. “It is going to be super fun, and we are looking forward to seeing you there.”

Gender and Sexuality Alliance

The Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) is a community for anyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The club is led by Henry Thwaites and Eleanora Herman, seniors, and Masha Thiel, junior. They meet every Wednesday during lunch in room A103.

“People should join if they want a space where they can celebrate our identities and differences, and feel safe doing so,” Thwaites said.

ASL Club

The American Sign Language (ASL) club was created for students to learn about ASL. During meetings, the ASL club will teach about the culture and ways to communicate through the signs. The club’s meetings are led by president Paetyn Rector and Lizzie Rice, seniors. They meet on the third Wednesday of every month during lunch in room E104.

“You don’t need to know American Sign Language to be a part of our club,” Rector said. “That’s one of the fun things about it, we learn together.”

Latino Student Union

Latino Student Union (LSU) is focused on creating a community for Latino students. The club is led by president Lina Corona, senior, event coordinators Mariel Garcia Cedillo and Alessandra Yee, seniors, and publicist Francisca Brevis, junior. Students can find LSU on Wednesdays at lunch in room D204. Valerie Partida, sophomore, has been a member of LSU since her freshman year.

“LSU is a really fun way to meet new people, and we get to do a lot of cool events,” Partida said. “I was hesitant on joining last year, but as soon as I did I knew I really wanted to be in the club because I got to meet a lot of cool people.”

Chinese Club

The Chinese Club is a place for students to learn about Chinese culture. The club is led by Lucy Lu and Sandy Li, juniors. They meet every other Tuesday during lunch in room B201.

“Chinese Club is a community where people can come and meet new friends and share their passion,” Lu said. “It’s a really fun way to learn about Chinese culture and the Chinese language.”

Slavic Culture

Slavic Culture Club is for students who want to learn about Slavic cultures. The club was founded by president Alexandra Linsky, senior, and they meet on the second Tuesday of every month during lunch in room C101.

“I created the club because I felt like I didn’t have a community that I could share my Slavic culture with,” Kinsky said. “So I felt like I should create that.”

Star Wars

Star Wars Club is for students and fans interested in Star Wars. During meetings, led by president Eleanora Herman, senior, the club will watch Star Wars movies and shows and discuss their opinions. The club meets every Wednesday during lunch in room C101.

“I think it’s a really cool thing that we have a Star Wars club,” Herman said. “I love cultivating a space for everyone at our school to talk about it. You can join regardless of your previous Star Wars knowledge, all are welcome to come and hang out and discuss Star Wars with like-minded people.”

Students for Sanctuary

Students for Sanctuary provides students with opportunities to volunteer and work with local organizations such as the Tualatin Food Pantry. The club’s meetings are led by president Charlie An and vice president Lilly Augustyn, seniors. Students for Sanctuary meets on the second Thursday of every month in the forum.

“I think [Students for Sanctuary] is such a great organization, and does a good job in giving back to our community,” Augustyn said.

Ethics Bowl

Ethics Bowl is a club for students to discuss and defend their positions on real-life issues. Ethics Bowl is run by president Chloe Cadwell, senior, and the club meets on Wednesdays after school in room A104.

“People should join if they want to philosophize about big questions and be a part of a community,” Cadwell said.

Model United Nations

Model United Nations (Model UN) is a place for students to learn about different world issues and international relations by taking positions as different countries in a mock United Nations. Every year, Model UN goes to a statewide conference at the University of Oregon. Ruby Fassett, junior, attended last year.

“Through Model UN, I got the chance to lead events and be a committee chair for the state,” Fassett said. “Model UN is really fun, we get to learn about different issues and meet people from all over the state.”

Spanish Club

The Spanish Club is for students who want to learn about different Spanish-speaking countries and practice their speaking skills. The club is led by co-presidents Duncan Duffield and Claire Sousley, seniors, and ambassador Lucas Sobotta, junior. Spanish Club meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month during lunch in room D204. Students of all Spanish-speaking levels are encouraged to join.

“I joined the Spanish Club because I wanted to help create a place where people can practice their Spanish in a non-academically demanding environment,” Sousley said.

Feminism Club

The Feminism Club is one way students are attempting to combat the issue of gender inequality. Run by Elise Row and Cadence Cox, juniors, the club aims to bring light to topics relating to gender and create a safe space for students to share their personal thoughts and experiences.

“It’s a safe space to talk about anything that’s on your mind when it comes to gender equality,” Row said. “And it’s open to everybody. There’s really no reason to not come in and just learn more.”

Interact Club

Students interested in making a difference in their community are welcome to join Interact Club. It is a club dedicated to making an impact on the world, both local and global. Run by Elosie Guarisco and Rachel Gerber, juniors, the club meets every other Thursday in E203, and is advised by Andy West, English teacher. Associated with the Rotary Club of West Linn, this club focuses on how high school students can make a difference by volunteering or raising money for a cause they are passionate about.

A few weeks ago, Interact Club partnered with Clay Street Table, a food pantry located near Portland State University.

“Every month, we go and make a big meal, we pack lunches, and then we go out to a spot and serve it to the community,” Gerber said. “So, we're actually interacting with the community.”

Red Cross

Red Cross Club is a club associated with The American Red Cross, a national organization that strives to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. The club organizes and hosts blood drives in order to give back to the community and be part of saving lives. The club is run by Catherine Betty and Augustus Day, seniors, and meets in the Forum twice a month on the second and fourth Thursdays. Jada Trieu, junior, is a club officer.

“I think my favorite part of the club is just how lax it is, because I'm doing something really great, but it doesn't take all of my time,” Trieu said. “All I really had to do was get blood donors, and if I could, I would have donated myself. I think it's just a really easy way for people to give back to the community.”

Sources of Strength

Sources of Strength is a group that wants to spread awareness about mental health and destigmatize talking about mental status. Led by Aleixandra Linsky, senior, and Saige Heiden, junior, the club meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month in the Forum. Mary Donaldson, senior, is also an active club member.

“People should join [Sources of Strength] because mental health is a stigma that needs to be broken, and it’s something we all struggle with,” Donaldson said. “We all have a brain, and it’s just important for people to know about it.”

Teen Advisory Board (TAB)

Teen Advisory Board (TAB), is a group of students who aim to spread awareness about drug usage and abuse. It is associated with Community Living Above, a larger organization dedicated to educating individuals and their families about drug and alcohol prevention. Run by president Claire Peate, senior, the club’s goal is to help students make informed decisions about the choices they are presented with and delay drug and alcohol usage.

“[TAB] has great information, it destigmatizes talking about drugs and alcohol,” Peate said. “It can make students more aware of what they’re choosing to do and put into their bodies.”

Creative Writing

Students with a passion for writing may be interested in the Creative Writing Club. Led by Clara Wood, junior, they meet Mondays in room E204 at lunch. Students in this club are able to have a creative space with other like-minded individuals. The club plays games to generate ideas, incorporates brainstorming sessions, and has the option to share their current work for feedback.

“My favorite part of the club is getting to talk to others who have similar interests to me,” club member, Arwen Mencke, junior, said. “We really get to have a lot of fun together.”

Fiber Arts

The Fiber Arts Club is for students who love fiber arts, such as crocheting and knitting. Fiber arts is a community for people with a common interest, whether you’ve mastered your crocheting skills, or you just want to learn more about fiber arts. They meet in room 704 on Monday’s during lunch. Led by students Cadence Cox and Luci LaViolette, juniors, the Fiber Arts Club aims to bring as many people together with a shared passion for arts. Saffron O’Connell, junior, is also a member of the Fiber Arts Club.

“It’s a very inclusive club, and you can learn how to crochet,.” O’Connell said. “And if you already know how to do that, you can just practice it and talk with your friends.”

Romance Book Club

Students interested in romance books may consider joining the Romance Book Club. As a new club this year, the Romance Book Club meets in the Library Alcove every other Monday during lunch. Led by Brody Olsen, junior, and Connor Greaney, school librarian, the goal of the club is to gather a group of people with a common interest; romance novels. Whether you’re in the middle of a good book, or want to discuss a new one with a welcoming group, the Romance Book Club is open to all.

“[My favorite part of the club] is just the community honestly, just having a place to go at lunch,” Olsen said. “Everyone's here for the same interest, the same reason. It’s just so welcoming.”

National Art Honor Society

The National Art Honor Society (NAHS) is one of the organizations associated with students who excel in a certain field. For members of NAHS, they all have a passion for art, in the many forms that it comes in. Run by students Ray Yoshimori and Brooke Thomson, seniors, Samantha Koenig, junior, and Georgia Santoso, sophomore, and advised by Diane Gauthier, art teacher, the club aims to provide a space for students who love art and have the ability to showcase their creativity.

“I think different kinds of art can bring really profound messages to people, some things that people maybe aren’t comfortable saying out loud, that are still really important discussions to have,” Thomson said.

To be eligible for the club, students must currently be enrolled in or have previously taken an art class at the high school and attend the monthly meetings that take place on the second Wednesday of every month in room 704. International Thespian Society

The International Thespian Society is a group of students who have a passion for theater. This club is run by Maggie MacKenzie, Rowan Sechrist, and Elizabeth Meyers, seniors, and meets in the Black Box every Thursday during lunch. Students who come to meetings and meet the other qualifications, such as participating in two full-length shows, and the regional competitions, can become inducted into thespians, reserved for students who love performing arts. The club competes twice a year in regional theater performances.

“[For] people who love theater, it’s the place to be,” Sechrist said. “It’s how you get closer to the people around you in the theater.”

Women in STEM Honor Society

Individuals with a passion for science, math, engineering, or technology are encouraged to join the Women in STEM Honor Society. This club aims to bring attention to female-identifying students with a passion for STEM-related topics in order to bring more women into the oftentimes male-dominated fields. Led by president Alyssa Riehm and Vice President Sydney Dow, seniors, Women in STEM meets on the first Tuesday of every month in room 715.

“My favorite thing from last year was having women in the actual industry [come in], specifically, like we had an aerospace engineer come in and give us a bunch of tips and tricks about getting into the industry,” Dow said.

Chess Club

Chess club is welcome to anyone with any level of knowledge in chess. It aims to be an environment to learn about chess, talk with friends, and participate in the community. The student leaders include William Caldwell and Macquarie Workman, juniors, and Dorian Wayne and Steven Walker, seniors. The chess club meets in C203 on Thursdays during lunch.

Political Science and Awareness Club

Political Science and Awareness Club (PSA) is a place for any student interested in learning more about politics and society to try and make a difference in the world, before and after they are able to vote. The club president is Griffin Childs, junior, and the club meets Thursdays at lunch in B203.

“Not a lot of us can vote right now, so if you want to make a change in the political world, if you want to see something done, join PSA so you can change the world,” Childs said.

Racket Sports

Racket Sports is a club for anyone looking to get some exercise and have some fun. The club focuses on badminton, ping pong, and pickleball. The student leaders include Anwesha Chowdhury and Sarah Yuk, juniors. Racket sports meets on Fridays after school on the tennis courts or on porch 1E.

“We get to have fun, engage in new skills, while also being in competitions with other schools,” Chowdhury said.

Speech Debate

Speech and Debate is an environment where every voice is heard and has power. Speech and Debate has experience connecting with colleges, and they travel around Oregon to debate with teams from other schools. Katherine Corso, Kalysta Castillo, and Addi O'Neill, all seniors, are this year’s team captains. Speech and Debate meets on Mondays at 3:15 p.m. in A206.

“We show a lot of expression of our voice, and especially with me, it made me feel so much better about my education, about my intelligence, and it makes me feel really smart,” O'Neill said.

National Math Honor Society

National Math Honor Society is a club for anyone who has completed Geometry and Algebra and is currently taking an advanced mathematics course and has an interest in developing their math skills in a supportive environment. The club is led by Leanna Li, senior. The National Math Honor Society meets on the first Thursday of every month in the Main Gym.

“I was never really good at math, but joining this club helped me realize that math can be applied to real life problems,” Li said.

Affinity

Affinity Club is a safe space for students of color. The club is led by Suhaani Garg, senior. The Affinity Club members meet once a month on Fridays to discuss how they can make the high school and the community more supportive of each other.

“It’s a safe space for the BIPOC community at our school, we have a lot of open conversations, and get to make new friends,” Garg said.
