World of HeARTs also sells coloring books made of elephant dung that talk about the Sri Lankan elephant, appealing to younger audiences. The business is active in the community and participated in the Downtown Willamette trick-or-treating in October by handing out coloring pages kids could return with for a discount on their purchase. “It has just been a positive experience all the way around and we’re big supporters of our local community,” May said.

Rainbow rewiring. Weavers from South Africa utilize old telephone wires to create colorful baskets. Since technology is becoming predominately wireless, these would end up in landfills if not repurposed. Due to the inflexibility of the material, they must use a mold to create the round shape and twist each piece individually. “The artisans have taken broken materials or tragic events like wars and turned them into symbols of hope and a way for them to make a prosperous living,” May said. “It is amazing to see the beautiful work that comes out of something that was meant to be destroyed.”

Tracking time. Created in Peru, earrings and jewelry are made of sterling silver and real butterfly wings. Community members track a butterfly’s life cycle to precisely know when it has been completed and when to carefully collect the wings. No butterflies are harmed in this process and purchases go to supporting habitat preservations in the Amazon rainforest. “Everything you see in [the shop] is not something that you’re going to find on Amazon or in Walmart or Target,” May said. “They are handcrafted unique items and there's a story and person behind every single thing.”

Buzzing business. A third-generation ceramic artist hand paints and sculpts bugs made with wire framework. The artist from Mexico creates designs on each of the insects, utilizing an assortment of colors. May connects with the artists through organizations and yearly conferences run by Fairtrade, and has had the opportunity to meet several artists in person. The connections made at the conferences directly affect the items for sale. “The word we hear the most is that we’re very unique,” May said.

Shining bright. To create cocoa leaf lamps, Filipino artists hand-pick the leaves to then wash, dry, and dye them. After this part of the process, the leaves dry once more and then are placed on a lamp backing to be laminated in the desired shape. “My favorite thing is seeing the uniqueness that comes out of every country and how their imagination sees things differently,” May said.

Stitching purpose. Women from the Himalayan region, such as India, wear sari dresses made from bright material. Once worn, they repurpose them to make items including bed throws, lamps, napkins, and jewelry. Additionally, the bath ropes they create from this material are reversible with the help of Kantha stitching. “Respecting the cultural, racial, and ethnic identity is super important and that their native crafts are being honored,” May said.
