Isabella Cao
Isabella Cao, 11 was slightly surprised when she was asked by the Yearbook adviser to stick with Yearbook for a whole year. Her original plan was to take the semester but, Cao said, “I continued to do it because [Mr.] Krake recognized that I was a natural designer and he encouraged me to take it full year.” And it’s safe to say she’s glad she did. Cao now holds the position of Design Editor on the 2016 Yearbook.

“I’ve always been into art, doodling all over my pages. I also enjoy shopping, but more about putting the outfits together. I’ve always had an eye for design and being able to have a blank page and fill it however I want to is really cool. I fell in love with design and yearbook,” said Cao. This discovery of her love of design is influencing her in ways she hadn’t been expecting. “I realized what I wanted to study in college, graphic design,” Cao said. “ I want to design the display cases for cool companies like Nike and Nordstrom.”

“One aspect of yearbook I really like is that we get to travel. We went to Denver for a journalism convention and the beach over the summer for an editorial retreat.” Though traveling with a team is something that Cao was familiar with long before her Yearbook trips. Before Cao had fully realized her love of design and graphic design, she was a volleyball player. Cao played on a club team that travelled up and down the coast for tournaments and games. But she decided recently that she no longer wanted volleyball to be her main focus. Said Cao, “I looked at my NHS forms and things I was filling out and realized everything I was doing was volleyball related. Like my leadership positions and volunteering.”
“I think it’s really cool that people are passionate about volleyball and want to dedicate themselves to it, but I realized volleyball isnt everything to me. This being my junior year, I want to explore other interests and find my own passion— something I want to dedicate myself to. I want to get into my music and art and graphic design. I think I will be exploring my artistic side.”
