It was 6:30 a.m. when 28 sleepy journalism students piled on a bus to head to the University of Oregon for Fall Press Day. From 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., students went from lecture to lecture to increase their knowledge of the world of journalism, outside of the classroom. “I learned a lot about career options in journalism,” Tyler Emmerson, senior, said.

The campus at the University of Oregon was bustling with students going to and from their classes on the chilly November day, some even protesting. “I think it was about teacher salaries,” Emmerson said. “I saw one sign that said ‘because we give a duck’, which I thought was pretty funny.”

In the Erb Memorial Union building though, approximately around 650 journalism students from around the state gathered for Fall Press Day. “I heard it was about 100 more students than last year,” Emmerson said.

Though Emmerson does not wish to pursue a career in journalism, he was able to also garner general tips for his future. “I think the best information I got was to not plan out your whole future now because most likely it will change in college,” Emmerson said.

Sophie Bradbury, freshman, was unable to join her fellow journalism classmates. “I had a big test that day that I couldn’t miss,” Bradbury said. “If I had gone I would’ve wanted to hopefully learn more on photography, just because I love taking photos and capturing moments.”

Journalism students have another field trip opportunity this spring to travel to Denver, Colo. to attend a national journalism conference.
