Unity Day posters cover poles, walls, and benches announcing the event, which took place on Friday, May 25th. This was the first full Unity Day, last year only a few class periods participated. During this event students lead workshops highlighting different cultures, political issues, and diversity. Unity Club is in charge of putting together Unity Day. This club was created by Laila Elmashni, senior, who is now its president, along with Abdul Ali, junior, Tristan Waits, Isa Mahoney, Alejandro Lee, Beloved Ulinwa, Rameen Ali, and Wally Milner, junior. Currently, Abdul Ali, Wally Milner, Audrey Minch, junior, Nicholas Bergeson, junior, Munya Fashu-Kanu, senior, Davis Lee, junior, Xavier Juhala, senior, are current board members. Dan Julian, Alex Close, and Jackie Hamm are also involved with coordinating Unity Day and helping with Unity Club. “[Last year] we went on a field trip to Catlin Gabel School, we went to their diversity inclusion summit, where we got the idea of creating an event similar to that at our own school,” Elmashni said, “We worked really hard to plan it…. I’m extremely grateful to be doing this in this particular community who has been very well receptive of all the work we do and very supportive and encouraging and allowing us to be able to put on an event like Unity day.”
