West Linn-Wilsonville School District averages high scores across the board

Out of 1,200 schools in Oregon, 114 schools received level 5 grades. The West Linn-Wilsonville School District is home to five of those highly ranked schools; Bolton, Stafford, and Sunset primary schools as well as Three Rivers Charter and West Linn High School. The WLWV schools ranked among the top 10 percent of schools statewide.

“We should always be a level 5,” Lou Bailey, principal, said. “We continue to be proud of our results.” West Linn High School has consistently been a top ranking school since 2008.

When compared to 20 schools with similar demographics, West Linn High School was ranked above average.

“I am honored that I attend West Linn High School,” Lizzie Torralba, sophomore, said. “The classes are difficult but I know they will help prepare me for college and my future.”
“Our goal as a staff is to get all of our data over 90 percent”, Bailey said. According to Bailey the main goal is to make sure that the West Linn students are prepared and ready for college.

Across the United States, schools are given annual grades based on achievement, previous year graduation rates, sub-group graduation rates, sub-growth and student improvement. For high schools, the test data from the statewide math, reading, science, and writing tests are taken from the current junior class to form the school grade. The elementary schools also receive a report card, but it is primarily based on student improvement in the state tests rather than the passing rate. The grades range from a level 1 to a level 5. Nationwide, roughly 55 percent of the schools earn a grade of a level 4 or 5.

Stafford Primary School had some of the biggest improvements in reading scores compared to any school in the state within the last two years. Sunset Primary also had a great improvement in their math scores this past year.
