Travis Fain, senior and ASB President, cuts out parts of the tree decorations for the enchanted forest-themed May Day Celebrations. The 2015 WLHS May Day Celebrations will take place Friday, May 1 at 1:45 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The 2015 May Day Celebrations are taking place this Friday, May 1. May Day is one of the longest standing tradition at West Linn High School. This year will be the 96th Annual May Day Celebrations and May Day Court.

Ten princes and princesses  were chosen to participate in the May Day Court. Other students are participating in the traditional Maypole dance and entertainment portion of the celebrations.

“The princes and princesses have to participate in an interview, fill out an application, and win by popular vote to be on the court,” Sarah McKay, junior ASB member and co-coordinator of the May Day celebrations, said.

The program will include the May Court, in which the court members will perform a dance, a full talent show made up of student performances, and performances from the school band and orchestra.

Participants practice for May Day celebrations for about two and a half hours total, according to McKay. This includes practice for the dance performed by the court and students in the celebrations and the talent show.

“The decor is much different this year from last year’s court,” McKay said. “The show is shorter and will be more appealing to students.” The theme this year is enchanted forest. McKay hopes that students will enjoy the show more this year and encourages attendance.

“We are really excited to showcase the talents of our student body in the talent show,” McKay said. She hopes that the celebrations will be more enjoyable for students because it will be shorter and involve more of the student body.

The May Day Celebrations are taking place Friday, May 1 at 1:45 p.m. and 7 p.m.
